        A Merry Christmas to All

Christmas Greetings from the Animal World

When it comes to sentiment, it's hard to outdo the Victorians. Today's site,
from
the Scrap Album, created by Malcolm Warrington, offers an engaging collection of
pictures selected from Victorian greeting cards. Gentle Subscribers, who
indulge in
an annual paddle through emotional waters, may enjoy these wonderfully
sentimental
images of animals sending happy Christmas greetings.

"The Scrap Album in examining the history of Victorian Greeting Cards ... aims
to
illustrate how a small private collection can be used to inspire, inform,
educate
and give pleasure to people of all kinds. ... All kinds of creatures, from the
homely to the exotic, in all sizes and forms, find themselves portrayed upon the
Victorian Christmas and New Year greeting card." - from the website

The exhibit features a charming collection of Victorian cards, with their
carefully
painted pictures and gently crafted verses, infused with a positive spin on the
world. Each page highlights a different creature, from winsome dogs to the
surprising inclusion of happy-looking insects. Even stylized frogs and rats of
the
most fetching appearance were incorporated into Victorian Christmas and New
Year's
cards. Brief commentaries note the salient points of each group and offer
general
background information.
