Site of the Day for Wednesday, April 6, 2011 Battery Technology: Highly Charged Today's site, from the journal, The Economist, offers an article from a recent print edition of the publication, outlining a particularly striking advancement in battery development. Gentle Subscribers will find a summary of the current research being carried out at one of America's respected universities. "A powerful experimental battery that can be recharged completely in minutes ... Engineers have long dreamed of shortening the time it takes to recharge batteries. Currently, that can be hours. For applications like motor vehicles it really needs to be reduced to minutes. Now Paul Braun and his colleagues at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, have succeeded in building prototype batteries which do just that." - from the website The report, a complete version of the print edition, covers the salient points made by Dr. Braun and his team in the peer-reviewed science journal 'Nature Nanotechnology'. Documenting the research thus far, the article notes the direction it has taken, with its use of nano materials to facilitate the dramatically increased charge rate. Before jumping completely on this spectacular battery-driven bandwagon, the generally informed discussion in the comments section is worth a perusal. An unexpected feature of the site is The Economist's "Learn More" option, activated whenever text is selected, and providing various references for further information from widely consulted sources, as well as the The Economist's own archives.
