Site of the Day for Wednesday, August 14, 2002 Stop Static The List, always concerned with the safety of its gentle members, would like to direct them to the website of the Petroleum Equipment Institute dealing with the under-reported hazard of fires caused by static electricity at the gas pumps. "Stop Static is a public safety campaign intended to increase awareness of the potential danger posed by the discharge of static electricity. In January of 2000 the Petroleum Equipment Institute began a process of documenting automotive refueling fires. This was prompted by a sharp increase of incidents that could not be attributed to a running engine or cigarette smoking, the leading known causes of such fires. . .To date over 150 refueling fires have been documented that appear to be caused by a discharge of static electricity. . ." - from the website The site's FAQ covers the essential information needed by consumers while related material covers such areas as electrostatic ignition of fires and explosions, exploding gas cans and the non-issue of refueling and cell phones.
