1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire

Today's site, from the U.S. National Archives - Pacific Region, presents a
modest
exhibit of selected primary source material on the devastating San Francisco
earthquake of April 18, 1906. Gentle Subscribers will find a compelling account
of
the disaster through the featured contemporary letters and records.

"Documents about the earthquake aftermath, from our archives located in San
Francisco. ... The documents selected for this exhibit are primary sources that
historians and other researchers study when they write about historical events.
They are a selection from the files created or received by Federal agencies in
or
near San Francisco at the time of the disaster. They contain eyewitness
testimony
of the damage of the earthquake, the ensuing fires, and the desolation that was
left in their wake. ...'There is practically nothing left' ..." - from the
website

Organized into sections of Introduction, Earthquake & Fire, Aftermath and
Rebirth,
the exhibit, through a select collection of documents, highlights details of the
event, from the calm notation of a court clerk to a telegram to the Surgeon
General
from the ranking officer in charge of sanitary conditions. Images of the source
materials are provided and can be slightly enlarged, while the accompanying
brief
annotations reveal the significance of the records. Concluding with a letter
from a
Berkeley engineering professor to a colleague, it notes the rebuilding efforts
underway only a week after the disaster.
