let me pass this message from EDAN and myself.
It is with deep sorrow that we share with you the sudden passing of
Hon. Dr. Elly Macha on Friday on March 31st 2017. Dr. Macha passed
away after a short
illness at Wolverhampton NHS hospital, UK where she had gone to seek
further treatment after several visits and admission at Nairobi and
Aga Khan hospitals.
She brought a strong voice of blind women and persons with
disabilities from the developing world in the many platforms that she
served in. Many of you
will have interacted with her from the time that she served as an
Executive Director of the African Union of the Blind (AFUB) for six
years. She was our
Programme Officer on Human Rights with the responsibility of following
up on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities
(CRPD), Advocacy for the promotion of Rights and Equalization of
Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in East Africa
Project(APREPWD) and Inclusion
of Persons with Disabilities in Development Programmes in East Africa
for five years at the Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network (EDAN).
In 2015 she
left EDAN to join politics of which she was successful and until her
demise, was a member of parliament in Tanzania.
Dr. Macha has left behind a daughter by the name Glory Haika who is
currently studying medicine in China. Her funeral is being organized
by the Tanzanian
Parliament. For those who would like to attend the funeral, we are not
able to meet your travel expenses but would be willing to coordinate
the travel
plans. For those willing to make a contribution towards the funeral
and or Glory’s education, please get in touch with me on the telephone
