My opinion is that having 16/24 teams is still a very generous amount of teams going to the playoffs.  I think the 82 game season is enough time to help decide things.  I think teams with a tie should have a game to break the tie if that were to happen .  Years ago the Twins and the White Sox had to play 163 to get a playoff team.  That was exciting!
Good luck to all the teams in the playoffs this year.

Hi Jason (and all), thanks for the opportunity to comment.
My preference is to keep it clean and simple, and limit the playoffs to the top eight teams in each conference (or 16 total). Inclusion of two-thirds of the league, following an 82-game season, strikes me as providing a sufficient number of teams with a fair opportunity to compete in the postseason, and serves to reinforce regular season results as meaningful. While trying to replicate real life to the maximum extent is a worthwhile goal, let's remember that there are a couple of factors that strongly influenced the NBA's decision to implement the play-in aspect: 1) the NBA was responding to the extenuating circumstances of the effect of COVID on the NBA rosters and schedule; and 2) the play-in serves as an ownership money grab. Neither of these factors comes into play for SOMIBA.
In the event that the majority of the league prefers a play-in option, I favor including a minimum qualifying percentage requirement along the lines Jason outlined. Not sure exactly where the line should be drawn, but the 40-45% range seems reasonable in order to uphold the value of our 82-game regular season.
Thanks to everyone for your efforts - I'm really enjoying the league!
Dave

Hi Jason:

1.       GRG is indifferent about a play-in tournament.  Whatever the majority wants is fine.  If there were more teams in the league or less teams already making the playoffs I would be more in favor of it.  But, right now, all but 4 teams in each league are going to make the playoffs anyway.

2.       I’d suggest that if there is a play-in tournament, that it just include everyone with a structure like one of the big basketball conference tournaments.  Maybe:

a.       9 plays 12 in 1 game playoff

b.      10 plays 11 in 1 game playoff

c.       7 plays winner of 10/11 in 3 game playoff

d.      8 plays winner of 9/12 in 3 game playoff

e.      1 plays winner of d, 2 plays winner of c, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5.  All 7 game series from here on.

f.        Winner of 1 plays winner of 4.  Winner of 2 plays winner of 3.

g.       Finals.

3.       Another possible playoff structure to include all teams would be more traditional:

a.       5 plays 12, 6 plays 11, 7 plays 10, 8 plays 9.  All in 3 or 5 game playoff

b.      1 then plays winner of 8/9.  2 plays 7/10.  3 plays 6/11.  4 plays 5/12.  All 7 game series.

c.       Rest of tournament like usual.

4.       I don’t think a winning percentage cutoff would work very practically.  It would mean the number of teams making the post-season would vary, which would mean you would need multiple structures for the playoffs.  Plus, in the West this season, there are only 6 teams about the .450 cutoff.

Subject: [somiba] Play-In Tournament?

Hello Coaches,

What are your thoughts on having a Play-In Tournament? It certainly is an interesting idea but keep in mind that we only have 24 teams in SOMIBA compared to the 30-teams of the NBA. That means there are a lot more teams in the middle compared to our league, and this year we really have exceptional parity.

If we want to go with a Play-In Tournament, I personally think that we should cap teams eligible based on the winning percentage such as only teams with at least a winning percentage of 0.450 (37-45) should be eligible for it. And most years that would probably eliminate most ninth and tenth place teams from participating, just as it would this season. If we went any lower 0.400 (33-49) that really seems low, but it would get more teams involved. What do you think?

Here are the standings after block 4:

12. 2020-21 SANTA CLARA SCJ       5  61  .076 53.0               24      58   .293

Note, Madison and San Diego would have a one game tie breaker game to determine who

participates in the playoffs and who does not, and therefore one of eight lottery

teams.

Also, Indiana would have four home games in round one while Hickory only three.
