BUT jumped out to an early 10-2 lead before going ice cold - scoreless over the
next 6:10 as COON reeled off 16 unanswered points. Finally, a Paul dazzler set
up a Robert Williams dunk and the drought ended. A Curry 3 ended Q1 with COON
up 25-19. Q2 started with COON unable to score for the first 3:25 as BUT took
the lead 26-25 as Butler scored 5 straight points. A Brooks 3 gave COON the
lead again but a Vanderbilt dunk reclaimed the lead for BUT. A pair of Brooks
FT with a second left sent the teams to the dressing room with BUT up 46-44 in
a low-scoring first half.
Joseph tied the game with the first bucket of Q3, then tied the game again at
7:35 with a FB basket then put COON up 60-59 on a 3 with 6:48 to play. A
Barnes 3 with 2:28 to play tied the game again before 8 straight BUT points
opened the lead again. A Bamba basket as Q3 came to a close ended the quarter
80-74. Barnes scored 1st in Q4 then BUT went on a 14 point surge in 3 minutes
making it a 18 point lead with Butler scoring 8 of the 14 points. As the
quarter wound down, 3 straight BUT fastbreak baskets pushed the lead past 20.
In a very active final 2 seconds of the game, Paul was fouled and split the
pair with 2 seconds left, Bogdanovic was fouled with 1 second left and split
the pair, Connaughton grabbed the rebound and was fouled and split that pair.
With Anderson picking up his 4th and 5th fouls all in the same second. Final
score BUT 112 COON 91.
Butler was POG with 35 points, 10 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, no
turnovers and 13-13 from the FT line. Paul added 13 points and 11 assists.
Smart added 15, Ibaka 14 and Thybulle 10 and 3 steals. Booked scored 19,
Barnes and Brooks 13 apiece and Wood 10 with 10 boards. One Bogdanovich scored
11 but was 1-8 from the floor while the other was scoreless picking up 5 fouls
in 6 minutes of play. FBI is investigating the amount of touching and feeling
he was doing. Possible deportation looming.
I kept stats on the fastbreaks for BUT. In the first half, they had 16 FB
attempts and scored 17 points on them. In the 2nd half, they had 21 FB
attempts and scored 34 points on them. This includes FT and 3's while the SOM
stat line of 46 FB points does not.
