A note from Jack Linghorne below (thanks Jack), related to the history of a
field being lost due to noise. It seems it was electric power, not IC engine,
related. This illustrates we need to be cautious of noise generated by electric
planes too.
As an added caution to my email yesterday:-
PLEASE until further notice, only use electric power for no more than 30
seconds to launch an electric sailplane. Do not fly any electric landplane or
an electric sailplane in sport (under power) mode. When we are fully confident
that electric model generated noise is not a problem, we will review this. A
test by members at the field today indicates it will not likely be a problem.
Thanks for your consideration,
Andy

Subject: Re: [soggi_members] IMPORTANT Mines Rd Field Neighbour Concern
The electric plane that caused the problem was a flying wing propelled a tiny
pusher prop the produced a loud high pitched whining. sound because the prop
tips were moving supersonically and one of the neighbours worked at night and
slept during the day. The owner s of these planes immediately stopped flying
these planes as soon as they realized there was a problem but by then it was
too late. The damage was done and the field lost. The two members with these
planes were good considerate conscientious People and are no longer members
and are unable to fly a model today — they are too old. Jack linghorne

Hi All,
While flying at the Mines Rd field today, members were approached by a
neighbour (Dave Coulter) who lives on Mines Rd slightly north of the field.
After assurance to Dave (and independent verification by him) that we have
Green Horizons permission to use the field, his ultimate concern is noise. Dave
has been assured that we do not fly gas powered planes and the only source of
noise is electric sailplanes for the less than 30 seconds it takes to launch.
I have spoken to Dave and he is content at the present time for us to continue
flying electric powered sailplanes. He will however let members on the field,
and myself, know if the noise from electric powered sailplanes is bothersome.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you are approached by Dave, or any other neighbour while on
the field, and they indicate that the noise from electric powered sailplanes is
bothersome, please IMMEDIATELY STOP FLYING ANY ELECTRIC SAILPLANES. Be
friendly, polite, courteous and diplomatic in any discussion with a neighbour.
The club will then address the issue.
It appears from discussion with Dave that the noise issue was the primary
reason that SOGGI was prohibited from using a Schoutens field some years ago,
and that Dave was involved in that affair. So please be very aware that any
disturbance whatsoever to a neighbour of our flying fields has the potential to
prohibit our use of the field.
Many thanks for your consideration.
