I got it to work.... I had to use an older version of bash (2.03) and it
compilied static. So I now have a new distribution, even though it has no
programs yet. Well if anyone else is starting the byolinux.org project I
would be happy to help.

Ok while you guys were talking about web pages, and IT Industry philosophy
:) I went off to the BYOlinux.org site.
I'll tell you what will *NOT* work first:
Well first I used Mandrake 7.2 as the base system.
-- I had problems getting Sysvinit to compile correctly, then it wouldn't
reconize init upon bootup, so I would get a Kernel panic.

Second, I tried Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 (Desktop).
-- It had almost the same problems and yes Kernel panic trying to find
init.

Third, I tried Turbo Linux, now I am getting somewhere, I got all the
sysvinit stuff to compile and it boots the "clean" filesystem but chokes
because my bash isn't there, reason = bash wont compile! --sigh

The first two things on the "new" linux system you are creating are
compilied statically, this seems to be a hard thing to do, even though it
shouldn't. I posted on the byolinux.org forum, but if any of you have C
experience and think you can figure out my compilation problem with bash
then let me know.

Has anyone tried Elfstone linux? I really am *Not* happy with some of the
current distributions.... I would like to use one that adheres strictly to
the proper placement of files, bootup scripts etc...
