The way I do it is as follows.

1.       Open Messages program from the main screen.

2.       Arrow to the thread I want and press select on it.

3.       Arrow to the message I want to read WordByWord or LetterByLetter.

4.       Do an Star+2 to change to what I want.

5.       Now I just arrow up and down to read the message.

Note the difference. You do not press select on the message you want to read.

Thank you so much for the response.

I fear then that I am misunderstanding the process.

Let me explain what I do and you can tell me where I'm going wrong please.

I entered on an sms.

I then want to read SMS word by word.

I press Star plus 2 to echo word by word and the phone confirms that this is
correct.

I then use  the up and down navigation pad to read, thinking that it must now
move word by word.  Is this correct or should I use a
different navigation command that I seem to have missed?

You can do the reading character by character and word by word even if you
aren't in an EDIT field. I do that from time to time when
I need to get an code to type in a product before I can access my account
information. The code gets sent to me by text message.
This is what they call two step security. I go to an web site, type in my user
and password; Then the web site send me a code by
text message to my cell phone that I then need to type into the web site. This
ensure it is me accessing the web site. I myself like
that level of security.

Hello Friends

I hope you are well.

I have a Smartvision2 user who wants to review messages from her bank etc.
That usually involves complicated account numbers,
reference codes etc.

This means that she will have to move character by character and word by word
in an existing received message, not an edit field.

I understand that the shortcuts Star plus 1 and Star Plus 2 can change the
character or word movement in an edit box.  But what do I
do if I want to read the screen, let's say an SMS, or a whatsapp message, word
by word?

I am currently unable to do so.  Repeating the last utterance or spelling the
last utterance also is not what I'm looking for since
it is usually more than a word at a time.

Please forgive me if I'm missing something obvious.

Plus sign? You don't need to that be able to add an 2nd or 3rd, 4th etc.
number. After I type in the first number; I just swipe to
get to another EDIT field type in the number, select the type of number etc.
You may need to tap the Menu button to see if there may
be an ADD or something like that when editing an contact entry.
