I now have the built in email program set up.
I've only just explored it for 5 minutes but I was able to delete or as it
calls it discard a message when in the list of incoming messages by tapping
the button on the right hand side lower of the buttons near the big OK
button.

Hi, I use the built-in email program and there are a couple of ways to
delete messages. While in the message once you have finished with it then
you can find the delete option at the top of the screen, I think. This is
one of the only times I use the touch screen I swipe up until I hear
"delete" said then I double tap the screen. If you want to delete the
message without opening it then when the message is selected (when you have
arrowed onto it) then hit the delete key. This is the bottom button between
the arrows and the hang up key. You will hear the message "message
discarded" which means it has been moved to the bin. I used to be able to
select multiple messages by holding down the centre of the arrows when on a
message but since the last update this doesn't work so I have to delete
message by message.
I also have an email account set up on the phone in outlook. I have had no
issues with this except it will only show me four messages at one time. I
have to have a better look at the settings to see if I can change this.

Thanks for your helpful comments.
I'm not sure why I have the problem, but perhaps something that I have set
has unintentionally caused it.
You've inspired me to keep trying though, because I operate primarily using
the keyboard on the phone.
I know the Smart Vision has a touch screen option, but the only appreciation
I have for that comes from the fact that visual users are apparently able to
benefit from that when assisting me without needing to shut down the speech
I depend on.

Hi Dave and all
While my computer was out of action, I used the email app on the SmartVision
using my bigpond email account.
I was able to receive and send emails ok but would certainly prefer to use a
computer.
I have since tried to disable my account on the phone as I have my computer
back but have not been able to do so as yet.
It is a bit annoying as it keeps downloading emails from weeks ago which I
don't want and don't know how to stop it doing so.
To delete an email, I selected the message, left arrowed once and then down
arrowed to the delete button. The email then goes into the bin folder.
BTW, I am a keyboard user, not a swiper!

I've tried several, but none affords me any comfort for handling basic email
functions on this device.
Consultations I have had with others have confirmed it is a common complaint
concerning Android, but neither can they offer any relief. They only confirm
they're experience has been the same as mine.
I have reviewed a couple podcast episodes concerning this phone, and they
are well done, as far as they go, but email is never addressed in an
episode. Perhaps laking this adds to the truth I have outlined.
Email has become an essential activity, and we don't necessarily have to
like it, but we still have to depend on it now, just as surely as we once
needed to have a mailbox on the doorstep.
