Hi Al,

Using the "latest" script you get an official binary
re-packaged to be handled by the Slackware and Slint packages management
utilities. This official binary indeed inform you every time a new version is
available, but it can't really update itself in in Slint.

This is not the case if you use the Slint package as it does not include this
feature. If you use the Slint package you will still get updates, but you
trigger these updates yourself when you see fit, running slapt-get --upgrade

In the Preferences menu of recent Firefox versions, that you van display typing
in thee address bar:
about:prefrence
in the General ab under the title Firefox Updates you have this choice:

Allow Firefox to
Automatically install updates (recommended)
Check for updates but let you choose to install them

If you want to stay with "latest" you could check the second option and whenever
you are informed that a new version is available, run "current firefox".

Best,
Didier

Hi, Didier.

I've used the script, latest, a lot recently.  (This is with 14.2.) I'm
wondering if I should use it every day before starting Firefox for the first
time, but I'm not sure even that will solve the problem.  I'd gladly use the
Slint package when I move to 15, but I think I'd get the same problem as soon as
Firefox tried to update itself.  I don't pretend to understand the software, so
I can't write knowledgeably about causation here.  It's only that the problem
recurs regularly in the same way.

I admit that these apparent automatic updating attempts are less irritating than
the ones on our Windows machine, which often kick us out of a program we're
using and make it difficult for us to figure out what to do.  Still, I think we
should be able to allow or disable them as we wish.

Best!

Hi Al,

Maybe you used the "latest" script to get the latest versions of Firefox and/or
Thunderbird instead of the Slint package (actually a Slackware package) and
since then a newer version was released.

Of this is the case you have a choice between to options:

1) Whenever this message appear, run again as root:
latest firefox.
2) Use instead the distribution package, removing Firefox and/or Thunderbird
from the blacklist in  /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc.

If you want guidance for doing the atter, please attach this file to your next
message.
Cheers,
Didier

Greetings!

I was using Firefox and got an alert that it couldn't update.  I tried to stop
this from happening, but obviously failed.  Anyway, when I got out of Firefox,
my speech was gone.  I had to use control-C in the terminal where I'd used
startx, then use startx again to get my gui back.

I of course don't want Firefox to update this way, since I want to use either
the relevant package in the Slint repository or use latest to update it.

I don't know whether it's always because Firefox was trying to update, but
losing speech this way happens almost daily.  It also happens with Thunderbird,
typicall after I've written and sent a message.  Does anybody know what's going
on or how to rectify it?

Thanks for any help.

Al
