uhmm, check if glibc are blacklisted, in that case they will not be upgraded.
and for fluxbox: I'm writing this mail from a fluxbox-ed firefox, so
it looks like it works.
I've noticed that fluxbox (or xorg) creates /tmp/.X0-lock at startup
and removes it at shutdown, maybe you have an old lock that prevents
proper starting.
