Hmm.. In most cases the kernel would print io/errors to /dev/console+
syslog if the disc is about to die..
A hard freeze would be very uncommon.

Well, but there is a lot of other hardware inside your mac with the
ability to die ;-)

 -> CPU
 -> RAM
 -> ATA-Controller (?)

Stop arguing with the expert.
Do "postsuper -r" or stop complaining.
