An exhibition at the British Library puts the early literary works of the young Brontë sisters next to 'A Clockwork Orange' and 'Alice In Wonderland', and asks some important questions about the genre's history. The literary genre of science fiction isn’t terribly accessible. Widely seen as an extension of man’s anxiety over the future, sci-fi is usually affiliated with geeks and/or militant feminists pawing over the otherworldly. As eminent science fiction writer Gwyneth Jones tells us: it was written by and for “skilled working class men” who applied their “technical know-how” to fantasy. The British Library’s latest exhibition, Out Of This World: Science Fiction But Not As You Know It, challenges the notion that sci-fi is restricted to fanboys. In displaying an extraordinary number of seminal and unexpected texts it reminds us that pigeon-holing this fiction is both incorrect and a shame. Fiction is fantasy in its very nature, science fiction just takes it a little further off-piste. Plus, if you rule out the genre, you rule out literature by HG Wells, George Orwell, Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro and JG Ballard. Drawing on the British Library’s own archives, as well as private collections of writers and critics, Out of This World charts the history of the genre back almost two thousand years to AD 170 when Syrian satirist, Lucian of Samosata, wrote A True Story. This bizarre tale of men on the moon anticipated all "modern" science-fictional themes of space and voyage with striking foresight."
