Vetenskapsrapporteringen i dagstidningar (här till och med
Aftonbladet) är notoriskt opålitlig, så också jag tvivlar.
Jag googlade lite och hittade detta om samma projekt, från oktober
förra året

"Lake Vostok is a stand-in for icy bodies that might harbor life, like
Jupiter’s moon Europa. Gerda Horneck of the German Aerospace Center
(DLR) said that any result from Lake Vostok is important for
astrobiology, and the search for extremophiles that could give hints
of what life could be like elsewhere. 'Let’s see what comes out next
round,' she told me at the end of the meeting on Wednesday."
Det är en isolerad underjordisk sjö, där man hoppas hitta mikrober som
har levt och evolverat under lång tid oberoende av omvärlden, och
detta har betydelsen för sökandet efter liv på andra ställen i
universum. Scientific American rapporterade igår om samma sak som
Aftonbladet, men på ett mer nyanserat sätt

"While the technical details are not yet available it seems that when
the scientists (including Sergei Bulat of the Laboratory of Eukaryote
Genetics at the St. Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute.) compared
this DNA to a database of known species they found no clear match. The
closest they could come was about 86% similarity, which is far enough
off to suggest a new species.
Obviously we’ll need to wait to see the details. Phrases like
‘bacterial DNA’ are pretty vague – are they looking at things like the
ubiquitous 16s rRNA, or some other sequence selections typically used
for metagenomic analysis? Do they have cells under a microscope?"
Intressant kan jag tycka men inte jättesensationellt, även om nyheten
bekräftas.
