Los Angeles fan Lee Henderson died on July 17 when a car he was workingunder
fell on him. Henderson was active in LASFS and worked on Loscon managing the
gaming room. His family is running a GoFundMe campaign to pay for funeral
expenses.
Filker Jordin Kare (b.1956) died on July 19. In addition to his life in fandom,
which included the release of the albums Fire in the Sky and Parody Violation,
Kare worked as an aerospace engineer and was involved with the Clementine lunar
mapping mission and developed the Sailbeam propulsion concept. Kare was a
partner in Off Centaur Publications, the first publisher specializing in filk
songbooks. Kare is survived by his wife, fan and con-runner Mary Kay Kare.
Canadian screenwriter, playwright, and director David Widdicombe (b.1962) died
on July 8. Widdicombe won the Aurora Award in 2001 for his stage play Science
Fiction. His comedy Santa Baby was named best film comedy at the Los Angeles
International Short Film Festival in 2006. Other works included the plays
Dinosaur Dreams, Swamp Baby & Other Tales, and The River Lady. Widdicombe had
suffered a series of small strokes and died from a large stroke.

The winners of the Rosny-Aîné Award were announced at the French National
Science Fiction Convention in Grenoble, the weekend of July 13-16.

The Rebel Award, Phoenix Award, and the Rubble Award, all presented at
ConGregate/DeepSouthCon 55 in High Point, North Carolina. The Rebel and Phoenix
Awards are official awards, while the Rubble is an unofficial, but traditional
award. The Rebel Award is presented for service to Southern fandom by a fan.
the Phoenix is given for support by a pro of Southern fandom and/or
professional work reflecting positively on the South, and the Rubble is given
for the fan who’s done the most to Southern Fandom.

Phoenix Award: Simon Hawke & Aaron Allston
Rubble Award: Chattanooga Choo-CHoo Hotel for closing down
Nnedi Okorafor has announced that her World Fantasy Award winning novel Who
Fears Death has been optioned by HBO and has entered early production with
George R.R. Martin listed as one of the Executive Producers.
