* Marvin Minsky (b.1927) died on January 24. Minsky was integral to the field
of artificial intelligence. He served as an advisor on the film 2001: a space
odyssey and later collaborated with Harry Harrison on the novel The Turing
Option.
* Call for Papers till det akademiska spåret på sommarens Finncon, deadline

* Åbo SF-Sällskap kunde fira 40 år 27 januari. Det är Finlands äldsta
sf-förening, men det är inte riktigt starten för finsk fandom. Tom Ölander var
aktiv innan dess, nästan som en enmansfandom. Ber ändock att få gratulera!
* The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge (Macmillan Children’s) won the Costa Book of
the Year award, presented January 26, 2016. It includes a £30,000
* Claes af Geijerstam är stor fan av Douglas Adams och Liftarens guide til
galaxen, berättade han i SVT:s "Gokväll" 15 januari.
* Editor David G. Hartwell, 74, died January 20, 2016. He suffered head trauma
in a fall, was hospitalized, and did not recover from a massive brain bleed.
Hartwell was one of the genre’s most accomplished editors, and was equally
known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the field and his memorable personal
style.
* Den kända japanska Studio Ghibli tecknade version av Ronja Rövardotter
börjar sändas i morgon (lördag 30 jan) på SVT:s Barnkanalen. (F ö började de
sex nya avsnitten av X-Files på TV3 i veckabn. Men eder SFJ-red ärinte så
hemskt upphetsad. Serien var ganska trist redannär den hette Arkiv X.)
* The Libertarian Futurist Society (LFS) has announced that L. Neil Smith will
receive a Special Prometheus Award for Lifetime Achievement. Smith created the

* Den danska elektronmusikpionjären, aktiv från tidigt 50-tal, Danish Else
Marie Pade, avled 18 januari, 91 år gammal

… Elektronmusik är ju litet skiffy, tycker vi. Hon var f ö också aktiv i
danska motståndsrörelsen under WWII och fängslades av Gestapo.
* Author A.R. Morlan, 58, was found dead at home in Ladysmith WI on January 6,
2016 in an apparent suicide. Morlan began publishing with a quiz in Twilight
Zone Magazine (1983). Her first story was “Four Days Before the Snow” (1985),
beginning her Ewerton series of horror stories set in an imaginary small town
in Wisconsin, which also includes novels The Amulet (1991) and Dark Journey
(1991). Her short fiction regularly appeared in year’s best anthologies, and
she published numerous collections, including Smothered Dolls (2006), Ewerton
Death Trip (2011), and Homely in the Cradle and Other Stories (2015). She also
wrote as Renee M. Charles and Ana Rose Morlan (and eventually changed her name
to the latter).
* Dussintals fans närvarade vid Johan Fricks begravning i Göteborg 8 dec, varav
en del tillresta från Stockholm. (Det erfars från Mats H som var en av de
tillresta.)
* Kim Stanley Robinson is the winner of the 2016 Robert A. Heinlein Award,
given for “outstanding published works in science fiction and technical
writings that inspire the human exploration of space,” recognizing his body of
work including 19 novels (including the Mars series) and more than 40 short
stories.

* Carl Johan De Geer skriver nu på en roman "om sin tid som SÄPO-agent",
framkom när han porträtterades i SvD-SÖndag 24 jan. Och just nu (då) höll han
på att läsa PK Dicks The Penultimate Truth. Ibland sitter han och läser på café
Kaffe på S:t Paulsgatan i Sthlm.
* Writer George Clayton Johnson, 86, died December 25, 2015. Johnson is best
known in the genre for co-writing Logan’s Run (1967) with William F. Nolan, and
for his work as a screenwriter. He wrote several episodes of The Twilight Zone
as well as the debut episode of Star Trek, “The Man Trap” (1966).
* Litet ny svensk sf: En annan gryning av Camilla Sten (Ordfront) utspelas år
2046 och ett främlingsfientligt parti har tagit makten i Sverige. Men så finns
det motståndsmän. Svinn av Lars Berge (W&W) handlar om ett megalomaniskt
köpcentrum i framtiden, strax utanför Stockholm, i ett Sverige fär
"välfärdsstaten kollapsat". Dagar utan ljus, nätter utan mörker av David Norlin
(Weyler) handlar om ett samhälle som befinner sig under något slags angrepp
(möjligen av kärnvapen), och överlöevare drar ut till något kallat "zonen"-
Huvudpersonen hamnar så småniongom på en atomubåt. Och ny finsk sf: Johanna
Sinisalos dystopiska roman Auringon ydin har utgivits på engelska som The Core
of the Sun. Från ett Finland i en nära framtid, en kontrollerande stat besatt
av hälsa och social harmoni, med förbud mot allt som är njutbart men
ohälsosamt.
* Lois Tilton has announced that she will no longer be reviewing short fiction
at Locus Online stating “Without consulting or informing me, they had begun
deleting material they considered negative from my reviews.” Locus has
responded that they were changing the was “editing future online review columns
was to be managed” to bring them into line with the way print reviews are
edited at the magazine. Tilton has published 205 review columns on Locus Online.
* Finska Yle skriver om förlaget ChinLit i Lund,som utger kinesiska verk på
svenska - däribland också fantastik.

* Musician Paul Kantner (b.1941) died on January 28. Kantner is best known as
one of the founding members of the band Jefferson Airplane, as well as its
short-lived spin-off Jefferson Starship. In 1971, Kantner was nominated for the
Hugo Award for the Jefferson Starship album Blows Against the Empire, the first
time a rock album had been nominated.
* Musikern Lars Winnerbäck har inrättat ett kulturpris, kallat Nyponet, som
årligen skall utdela 100 000 kr till "någon som berikar Linköpings kulturliv".
* The Critics’ Choice Awards were presented on January 17. Mad Max: Fury Road
had led the nominations with 13 and also led the winners, taking the award in 9
categories. The only other genre films to win were Inside Out and Ex Machina.

* Rob Latham, who helped create the Science Fiction Studies program at the
University of California-Riverside, has been dismissed despite holding tenure
from the organization. An investigation into Latham began when he was accused
of sexual harassment by a graduate student. The resulting investigation argued
“strongly against a finding of sexual harassment,” however the university
elected to remove Latham.
* De isländska sagorna (som iofs i hög grad är nordiska sagor, men nedtecknade
på Island) nyutges i ett stort nordiskt samarbetsprojekt, i nyöversättning till
de nordiska språken.

Dock meddelas att de märkligt nog inte kan köpas i bokhandlar eller beställas
via nätbokhandlart, utan enbart beställas per postorder från det isländska
förlaget (Saga förlag, Reykjavik).
* Philip Pullman, the author of His Dark Materials has announced his
resignation as the patron of the Oxford Literary Festival. Pullman explained
that he had a difficult time resolving his position as the festival’s patron
and his position as president of the Society of Authors given that the latter
seeks to have authors receive a fair payment for their work and the former does
not pay appearance fees.
* Vår vän Fredrik af Trampe dök upp i DN-Namn och Nytt i mitten av januari och
förklarade att en parodi, "Koskällanb", efter nyårsdikten "Nyårsklockan" är
hämtad ur KTH-spexet "Theoderik den Store" av Ärland Noreen, och finns i dennes
diktsamling Nya dikter (1949). Parodidiktens ursprung hade diskuterats på Non
under några dagar. Trampe hade f ö tillsammans med Anna-Lena Lodenius ett
radioprogram på julafton med "sunkit"-musik på jultema, väl värt att höra här:

* Actor Alan Rickman (b.1946) died on January 14 from cancer. Rickman has
numerous appearances in genre films, including playing the role of Severus
Snape in the Harry Potter series, Sir Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest, the voice
of Marvin in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy film, Richis in Perfume, and
more. He received Saturn nominations for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Galaxy
Quest, Sweeney Todd, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II.

* Fan Jack Robins (b.Jack Rubinson, 1919) died on December 23. Robins was a
member of ISA and helped it turn into the Futurians, which he invited Isaac
Asimov to attend. He attended the First Eastern Convention as well as the first
Worldcon. Robins published the fanzines The Scientific Thinker and Looking
Ahead and was eventually inducted into the First Fandom Hall of Fame and made
an N3F Life Member.

* A petition on Change.org has been created asking IUPUI, the Joint Institute
for Nuclear Research, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to name
element 117, currently called Ununseptium “Octarine” in honor of the late Sir
Terry Pratchett.
* CBS and Paramount have announced a lawsuit against the producer of the
fan-funded Star Trek fan film Axanar. The copyright infringement suit names
both Axanar and Prelude to Axanar and seeks $150,000 for each element of Star
Trek the films infringe. Axanar’s producer, Alec Peters , raised $638,000 on
Kickstarter, more than half a million more than he targeted.
* The United States Post Office has announced that they will release a series
of four stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of the debut of the original Star
Trek television series.
