possibilities of conscious, self-aware machines, the question of
whether or not aliens would have the same experience of consciousness as
humans or the feasibility of downloading human consciousness into
machines or other organisms or expanding it onto other levels of
existence. By incorporating fictional technology which can make just
about anything possible, science fiction can provide the vehicle for

study of consciousness per se on the grounds that it was too ambiguous
and non-quantifiable. However, the development of artificial
intelligence, so-called thinking computers, interactive virtual reality
environments and non-local action, or action at a distance, has placed
the study of consciousness in the fore front of many minds."
Frågan om jagmedvetande har länge varit central i sf-genren. Vi har Asimovs
robotar och Clarkes HAL och Heinleins Mike. Jag hyser inget tvivel om att
någon dag bygga en dator som kommer att klara turingtesten, och som får ses som
jagmedveten. Det torde dock bli svårare än många tror och ta sin tid.
