"LASFS member Dwain Kaiser (1947-2017) was shot to death on July 3 by a
teenager who, together with his mother, lived with Kaiser and his wife in the
apartment above their bookstore in Pomona.
Dwain George Kaiser, 69, owner of Magic Door Used Books, was shot several
times and killed just after midnight in his apartment at 175 W. Second St., in
the downtown Arts Colony area, police said. His apartment sits above the
bookstore he and his wife have owned for more than a decade.
The teen suspect and his mother shared the apartment with Kaiser and his
wife, according to Pomona police Sgt. Brian Hagerty. The two families are not
related to each other. Hagerty said they were roommates.

The 2018 World Fantasy Convention (WFC) has announced the addition of Scott
Edelman as a Guest of Honor, joining GoHs Michael J. Walsh and Tom Kidd, and
special guest Aliette de Bodard.
WFC 2018 will be held November 1-4, 2018 at the Baltimore Renaissance
Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore MD. The theme is “Ports in a Storm.”
The James White Award Short Story competition has announced this year’s winner:
“The Morrigan”, Stewart Horn
A special commendation was given to “May the Pain Guide You Home” by Daniel
Roy. The James White Award is open to previously unpublished stories between
1,000 and 6,000 words in length by non-professional authors. The winner
receives £200 and publication in Interzone.
Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad (Doubleday) won the Andrew Carnegie
Medal for Excellence in Fiction, chosen by a seven-member selection committee
of library professionals. Whitehead will be honored and receive a $5,000 prize
at the American Library Association’s (ALA) Annual Conference, June 24, 2017 at
the Hilton Chicago in Chicago IL. Finalists Michael Chabon (Moonglow, Harper)
and Zadie Smith (Swing Time, Penguin) will also be honored and will each
receive a $1,500 cash prize.

PREMIO MINOTAURO. Nieve en Marte (Snow on Mars), a science fiction novel
written by Pablo Tébar, is the winner of the 2017 Minotauro Award, Spain’s
literary award for the best unpublished SF, fantasy or horror novel. The prize
is worth 6,000 Euros.
The novel earned the unanimous vote of the Minotauro Award Jury, this year
composed of writers Javier Sierra and Manel Loureiro, the Director of the
Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Ángel Sala, movie
producer Adrián Guerra and the editor in chief of Ediciones Minotauro
publishing house, Marcela Serras.
Heathcote Williams, British writer and actor, died 1 July, aged 75. Genre
appearances include Slipstream (1989), Orlando (1992), Alice in Wonderland
(1999), The Sandman (2000), Dinotopia (two episodes, 2002-3), and City of Ember
(2008).
