Winners of the 2017 British Book Awards were honored in a ceremony May 8, 2017
at Grosvenor House in London.
Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent (Serpent’s Tail; Custom House) won Fiction
Book of the Year and Overall Book of the Year. Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s The
Girl of Ink & Stars (Chicken House) won Children’s Book of the Year.
Among other awards announced, Head of Zeus was named Independent Publisher of
the Year, J.K. Rowling was recognized for Outstanding Contribution to the Book
Trade, and Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two took
the Bestseller Award.
Winners of the French-language Prix Aurora-Boréal were awarded on May 7, 2017
at the Congrès Boréal in Québec City, Canada.

The Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS) has announced the winner of the
2017 Compton Crook/Stephen Tall Award:
Too Like the Lightning, Ada Palmer (Tor)
The award honors the best first SF/fantasy/horror novel of the year, and
“includes a framed award document and, for the novel’s author, a check for
$1,000 and an invitation to be the Compton Crook Guest at Balticon for two
years.” The award will be presented at Balticon 51, held May 26-29, 2017 at the
Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore MD. Selection is by vote
of the BSFS membership.
