Sf-fanen och piratpartiledamoten av Europaparlamentet, Amelia Andersdotter,
skall (enligt artikel i Metro 24/1) bli rådgivare åt FN-organet IGF. Internet
Governance Forum är ett organ för gränsöverskridande frågor kring Internet.

Over the weekend, fans became aware of a bid to host the 2016 Worldcon in
Beijing, although it wasn’t clear at first if it was a real bid. Steve Cooper,
one of Loncon 3′s co-chairs, has since stated that the Beijing group has been
in touch with Loncon 3 and plans on filing bid paper work prior to the February
15 deadline. Beijing will be bidding against an already announced bid for
Kansas City.

På sitt sammaträder i december gav Alvarfonden bidrag till dels Swecon i juni à
10 000 kr, dels Konfekt i april à 5 000 kr och dels till Malmöfandom à 3 000 kr
(som planerar en sf-con till nästa höst, enligt senaste uppgift). I övrigt gick
Mårten Svantesson in i styrelsen, Sten Thaning går ned till suppleantplats och
Mats D Linder avgår som suppleant.

The ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory has detected signs of water vapor being
ejected from Ceres, the largest asteroid. The two plumes, which are in
different regions of the asteroid, are probably sublimation of ice into clouds
of vapor or ice volcanoes. Scientists have believed that Ceres might have water
for more than thirty year, but this was the first proof.

The winner of the 2014 Crawford Memorial Award, presented annually by the
International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts for an outstanding
first fantasy book, is Sofia Samatar’s A Stranger in Olondria (Small Beer
Press). According to award administrator Gary K. Wolfe, the novel won broad
support from the nominating committee. The other books included on this year’s
Crawford shortlist are Yoon Ha Lee’s story collection Conservation of Shadows
(Prime Books), Helene Wecker’s novel The Golem and the Jinni (Harper), and N.A.
Sulway’s novel Rupetta (Tartarus Press).
Participating in this year’s nomination and selection process were Farah
Mendlesohn, Cheryl Morgan, Ellen Klages, Graham Sleight, Liza Groen Trombi,
Stacie Hanes, Karen Burnham, Candas Jane Dorsey, Jedediah Berry, and Jonathan
Strahan. The award will be presented on March 22, 2014 during the International
Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts in Orlando FL. The IAFA’s Distinguished
Scholarship Award will be presented to Istvan Csicsery-Ronay, Jr., and Vera
Cuntz-Leng will receive the Jamie Bishop Memorial Award for a work of
scholarship written in a language other than English.

Den gamle sf-fanen Gabriel Setterborg (som varit med sedan 50-talet och en gång
skrev romanen Anfall från rymden under pseud Eric Crane) flimrade förbi i SVT:s
program "Sverige!" 25/1. Det var inslaget om telefonkiosker mot slutet, där
Gabriel berättar om hur han som grabb brukade kolla telefonkiosker efter
kvarglömda 10-öringar. Programmet går i repris och finns på SVT Play.
