We all know about how John W Campbell published an atomic bomb story in 1944
("Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill), which made the US intelligence service really
worried. Campbell was questioned and explained that all info in the story was
from open sources. (He later also said that he had a hunch that something was
going on concerning atomic research, because her had a number of CoAs for
atomic scientists to Astounding SF to a PO Box in New Mexico.)
But here an even earlier "leak", in the magazine Coronet, in May 1942,
"Utanium 235 - Can it Win the War?":

"In guarded laboratories all over the world, quiet men of science are engaged
in a grim race. The prize? A weapon which alone might win the war."
The article seems rather initiated, though some details are of course wrong.
It's interesting that Lise Meitner's contribution is mentioned - I thought it
wasn't that well-known at the time. When the Nobel Prize was awarded for
splitting the atom, Otto Hahn got it alone and Meitner was forgotten. As a Jew
she had fled to Stockholm, but corresponded with Hahn. Was it some remaining
anti-semitism that denied her a Nobel?
