Ed Notes:
Frank Sinatra spent a great deal of time in recording
studios in 1969. He began the year with Mr Jobim and their
second album of bossa nova songs-- this time all Jobim com-
positions. He then laid down the "My Way" album, then the
McKuen and finally "Watertown." There were also a few
singles sessions. In all, he recorded 39 songs plus he read
four poems by Mr. McKuen. Although I much prefer "Sinatra-
Jobim," "A Man Alone" is the finest singing done by Frank
that year. As a matter of fact, he would never sound this
good again. The vocal timbre is so rich and reedy here.
The album only sold 60,000 copies and was dismissed by
a number of music critics because of the content. They
may have been right. But I find the vocals so damn good
throughout, the work is really required listening if you are
a Sinatra fan.

Larry Crawford:
I agree with you, I quite like " A Man Alone". I like all the FS recording done in 1969. I think it was a very good year indeed.

Danny Faux:
I agree too. I like " A Man Alone ", " Watertown " and " Sinatra- Jobim 2 ". And some tracks of " My Way " as well. " I love " All My Tomorrows ", - the arrangement by Costa
is excellent, and Frank's vocal has a hauntingly quality I find heart-wrenching in a way I can't
quite describe in words. The same song he recorded in 1959, the same lyrics, but you can
feel the wistful nuances in his delivery, we can actually feel that he doubts its original hopeful message. Maybe all his tomorrow didn't quite turn the way he had believed. Hey,
maybe I am reading too much out of the recording, but that is what I felt when I listened to
it for the first time in the lp. Having said that, I love both recordings of "All My Tomorrows ".
1959 was a very good year indeed...
And I believe that the " B" side of the " My Way " single is a real beauty too. A Riz Ortola-
ni lovely tune, " Blue Lace "

Ed O'Brien:
We have Tony Bennett to thank for Frank's marvelous recording of "All My Tomorrows"
in 1969. Tony did a very intelligent, gentle reading for his 1965 "Songs for the Jet Set" with Don
Costa. Frank was knocked out by it. He realized his 1958 effort had missed the mark. He more
than rectified that misstep with his definitive effort with Mr. Costa. It is in my "Sinatra 101" book.

"Blue Lace" is a lovely recording Riddle gave Frank a great backing and the bittersweet
memory piece is one of my favorite Sinatra recordings. Frank and Nelson would only work together
on three more sessions after that evening in November of 1968.

It would take Frank another 30 years before
he got around to recording the Jack Lawrence gem
"Linda." "Roses In The Rain" is a rarity very nicely sung
by Frank. He continued plugging the tunes from "It
Happened In Brooklyn,"with "It's The Same Old Dream,"
and he did the two songs he recorded the most through
the years "Night And Day" and "The Song Is You." "If
You Are But A Dream" is one of Sinatra's finest recordings
from the 1940s and he never sang it badly. Quite a show.

Ed O'Brien:
TD & Band pulled in 3,750. Admission  was $1.10 advance -
$1.25 at the door. After closing at the Golden Gate, San Francisco,
3-3-42, the band played three-one nighters: Sacramento, Sweet B's,
in Oakland( 5,423 admissions, besting the old record, set by Glenn
Miller, by 1,250), San Diego, Pacific Square B( 5,810 draw, besting
Kay Kyser by over a 1,000). Then on the 17th, there was a one-nighter
in Houston, Texas. The hot club at the time was The Shamrock with
the Emerald Room. Band probably played there.

LAS VEGAS NIGHTS   -- THE LAST FRONTIER TOWN
According to a HR news item, Richard Connell and
Gladys Lehman were slated to write the original
screenplay for this film, which was to star Allan
Jones and Bert Wheeler. This film marked Tommy
Dorsey's first appearance in a feature film, as well
as the first screen appearance of Frank Sinatra, who
was the featured singer with Dorsey's band at the time.
News items also report that Esther FernÃ¡ndez, Teddy
Hart and Ellen Drew were considered for roles in the
film, and that a party scene was filmed on location in
Las Vegas, NV. According to copyright records, Red
Donahue and his mule started in vaudeville in 1912.
The song "Dolores" was nominated for an Academy Award.

note: Paramount session sheets refer to Frank as "boy singer."

Ed O'Brien notes: Damon Runyon Memorial Fund had 21 major
stars at their  gala, 3-19-47. The first hour was broadcast
by ABC-Radio. Frank and Dinah Shore agreed to record
a single with all the funds going to the D.R.M.F.
The session took place at the Columbia Studios in
Hollywood, 4-25-47.All of the participants donated their
time freely. Frank and Dinah recorded "Tea For Two"
and "My Romance." Here is a photo from the session:
