So you see the buttons, but not the images in them (do you see the text ?)
A datatype problem ?? Can you open the images in SimpleMail/Images with
MultiView ?

No problem here on OS 3.5 and a 800x600x16 screen.

Add (or modify) in .config :
Hidden.DontUseTheBarMCC=Y
