Unfortunately not. We're dealing with two different models for selecting.
We also need to be very clear on the language because it can get confusing
very quickly.
Simply put, a passage selection is what you make when you use shift + arrow
combinations. The selection is defined by the points at which it starts and
ends, and by which staves it is on. The staves don't need to be adjacent,
although you can't select non-adjacent staves with arrow combinations.
(I've written a plug-in with beta 2 that will allow you to do this through a
dialog.)
The kind of selections we've been talking about are so called "multiple"
selections. The mouse wielding mob can hold the control key down and left
click items in the score to add them to the selection. There are no limits
on this so a multiple selection can contain any combination of items.
At present, the only options for us are to make a multiple selection through
one of the filter commands, the advanced filter dialog, or by pressing
Control + Shift + A to select more of the same as was discussed earlier.
I do have plans for a plug-in that will render the entire score as list
boxes so that you can "brows" the score through a dialog and select any
combinations that way. You certainly won't be getting this with beta 2 but
I can release the plug-in at any time as a stand alone component which you
can download and access through the plug-in menu.
One fussy point. You wrote: "If I have selected a system as we've been
discussing". You wouldn't have selected the system, just items on one staff
within one system. If you had selected the system itself then all items on
all staves would have been selected. Remember, we're talking about multiple
selections here.

Another question: If I have selected a system as we've been discussing can I
in any way select another system above or below using some arrow
combination, as well?
e.g. all expressions text items in bars 12 through 16 are selected in the
Piano A staff. I am now being so very particular that I also want to select
the expression text items in bars 17 through 20 just below that, also on the
Piano A staff. Any way to Alt+Ctrl+arrow to add those bars to the selection?
Yes, I know, I'm asking a lot.

Absolutely, you'd only be deleting the expressions on that one system.

You'll be pleased to hear that in beta two Control + Shift + A not only
makes the selection but also reports the bar and position of the first and
last items in the selection. Also, selecting an entire chord or bar will
also be reported properly.

W/r Ctrl-Shift-A for selection being context-sensitive -- that's absolutely
wonderful information. It would help to explain why I've not always been a
fan of that keystroke, now I know why.

then delete, I only delete expression text on that third system and all
others are unaffected?
This would seem to be a bit difficult for the blind to determine the extent
of a delete operation, to know exactly what bars are affected. Of course
using the Alt+f2 to list out the pages/systems can help.

The select bars dialog is new is Sibelius 5.
The select more feature has a keystroke (Control + Shift + A) and it is
context sensitive.
. If a note in a chord is selected then the entire chord is selected.
.If an isolated note or entire chord is selected then it selects the entire
bar.
. If an item which is not a note or rest is selected then every item of that
type will be selected on the current staff but in the current system only.

Assuming that you only want to delete the notes and rests in one
staff without deleting the staff itself, do the following:
1. Make sure that you are in the staff whose notes you wish to delete.
2. Under the Edit Menu, select the Select submenu and go to Select Bars.
3. You will be in a dialog with a from and through box. You'll be in the
through box. Type the number of the last bar whose notes you wish to
delete.
4. Tab to the next box. Usually, the first note of the score will be
selected in that box already. If you want to delete from some point within
a score that is not the beginning, type the number the bar at which you wish
to start your deletion. There is no way to begin your deletion at a point
within a bar using this command.
5. Tab to the box that says make system selection and be certain that it is
not checked. This is important because if you have checked it, not only the
notes, but also the very staves will be removed which will change the number
of bars in your score.
7. Tab to and click OK. You should find that you have empty bars on the
staff whose notes you wish to remove.
As far as I know, this select command was not in Sibelius 3. I just
discovered it myself and I think it's very cool.
There are also select all and select more commands. I've done some
fiddling with the select more command and, as far as I can tell, if you are
on the first beat of a bar in one staff and choose select more, the entire
bar will be selected. However, if you are at the first beat of a bar in
more than one staff, say a piano, for example and select more, nothing seems
to happen. Finally, it also appears that if you are on a beat other than 1
in a bar and select more, nothing seems to happen.
Anyone else feel free to chime in and correct anything I've gotten
wrong here.
