Jack,

Well if I were to take a guess I would say that it may have something to do 
with the "Hall" effect where a voltage is created on both sides of a conductor 
by a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the current.



Incidentally, "M" was already taken, as it defines the magnetization within a 
material, whereas "H" defines the magnetic field strength.  You can obtain the 
magnetic susceptibility (Xm) of a material by using the ratio M/H.
