si-list:

The grand experiment to limit OOP (Out Of Office) posts to the list
users has been underway several weeks now. My assessment, (and that
of quite a number of list users who have contacted me off-line) is
that the negative side-effects of having the Reply-To: message header
point to the list rather than the user outweigh the benefits of trapping
a few OOP messages.

Even though the list is currently trapping some OOP messages, some still
manage to leak through and get distributed to all 3500+ list members.
Some user's mailers send the OOP messages directly to the user as
opposed to the list. These can't be trapped. The net effect is that
we are actually consuming more bandwidth on OOP messages now than we
were before. If the OOP messages are really distracting, I would suggest
that individual users configure their mail tools to filter out the
offending messages.

A second factor is that due to the change in the behavior of the Reply-To:
function, a number of users are inadvertently sending what was supposed
to be 'private' e-mail to the list. This has two effects: One, it causes
unecessary bandwidth usage, and two, and probably more important, these
misdirected messages are at best sometimes embarrassing, and at worst,
may be the vehicle for compromising proprietary info. So far no real
damage has occurred as the result of the misdirected messages, but sooner
or later it is bound to happen. (try explaining to your manager how the new
functional spec document for your latest unannounced product that you were
sending to a colleague somehow ended up the mailboxes of 3500 of your closest
friends (and competitors)).

So..... the grand experiment has run it's course. As of now, the Reply To:
function will once again point to the message originator rather than the
list.

Apologies to all those who were annoyed by the changes of the past
few weeks. Apologies to those who actually liked the way the experimental
changes worked.
