Hi Jan & Patrick,
The last bad experience we had with optical transceivers was
similar to the one you describe but in our case the reason was
that we destroyed them.
Some transceivers emitted light and some other not and they got
destroyed because the company that soldered them on the board
applied ultrasonic (I think for cleaning the boards) and
destroyed an internal resonant cavity. I hope that you are luckier
than us.
