Hi All, My Technical Tidbit this month discusses another effect of allowing signals to cross plane breaks on printed wiring boards, generation of common mode currents that cause emissions problems. The 5th and final article about plane breaks (for now anyway). Abstract: Signals that cross ground/power plane breaks on printed wiring boards (PWBs) can cause common mode currents on system cables resulting in excessive EMI emissions in addition to any signal quality issues. Data is presented that shows significant emissions can result from a small 5 cm plane break, even at frequencies of only tens of megahertz.
