Hi All, The delete button comes in very handy=2E I use it for those who are obviously clueless and are using the list to increase their vicarious knowledge and pad their resumes=2E I suspect that there is a lot of resume= padding(a nice word) in progress=2EI have it on good authority that Intel = has shut down hiring of SI engineers in the states and has decised to hire scads of them in India=2E I personnally have benefited by having a skill t= hat is not easily learned=2E However, I am sure we have all experienced applicants who used keywords and a plausible explanation to show they are knowledgeable=2E If the interview process is not rigorous enough to weed o= ut the fakers, the SI filed may become a group of chalatans=2E I think it is = our duty to prevent this from happening=2E Jim Freeman Original Message: ----------------- From: Hargin, Bill bill_hargin@mentorg=2Ecom Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 20:52:26 -0800=20 To: bdewitt@ix=2Enetcom=2Ecom, si-list@freelists=2Eorg Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: just curious Hi Brent =2E=2E=2E > Has this list become the most popular technical list in India=20 > in the last > few months??? Perhaps =2E=2E=2E This is an interesting question=2E The Internet, jet tr= avel, cell phones, and commercial broadcasting have progressively shrunk the globe=2E As the globe shrinks, things that used to happen one state away,= now happen countries and continents away=2E The underlying question surrounding previously American jobs going to Asia or other regions parallels the "protectionist" (import tariffs, etc=2E) vs=2E open market question=2E (A difficult subject=2E) I can't say I have a good feel for how an American engineer should respond= =2E The Indian and Chinese economies are growing faster than ours (in the U=2ES=2E)=2E They buy U=2ES=2E products, and we hire some of their engine= ers and call center people to help develop and support some of those products=2E=20= (Note: I'm not driving this, and you're not =2E=2E=2E it's being driven by= immutable economic forces=2E) If I could make a book recommendation =2E=2E=2E beyond some of the excelle= nt SI books that have been discussed on this list =2E=2E=2E it would be "Who Mov= ed My Cheese?" by Ken Blanchard ($13 paperback; $10 Audio on Amazon)=2E The poi= nt he makes -- in about a 2-hour read (longer, if you read slowly like I do) -- is that change is going to happen=2E Jobs are going to move from Ameri= ca to India, or wherever=2E Instead of trying to hold onto the past, though,= he recommends "following the cheese=2E" The point is kind of obvious, but sometimes the most obvious points are the ones that we habitually overlook= =2E The book covers a macro-level point that I believe applies here=2E I'm no= t sure what the "micro-level" answer is=2E Better training and differentiation, perhaps? Move to India? Start a hardware engineers' union? :-) We see this in Seattle, where I live, all the time=2E Boeing employees (b= oth engineers and hourly workers) want to keep jobs and Boeing's headquarters in Seattle=2E So, the company responds by moving the HQ to Chicago, and farming out subassemblies to every part of the world=2E =20 I doubt that many people (Americans or otherwise) on this list have the inertia or leverage to affect a trend of this magnitude =2E=2E=2E Or to st= op the free flow of information over the Internet, for example =2E=2E=2E So the b= est thing you and I can do is decide what we're going to do now that the chees= e is moving=2E If I had specific (micro-level)ideas, I'd be happy to share them =2E=2E=2E Maybe someone else does=2E I'm doing well just to keep eno= ugh cheese on my table =2E=2E=2E And it's moved a few times these last 5 years= , requiring that I change my approach, and keep my eye on the cheese supply!= Sorry if I'm raining on anyone's parade =2E=2E=2E I just think that compla= ining about this type of trend will only slow down a person's ability to respond= effectively=2E Bill Hargin Redmond, WA, USA > -----Original Message----- > From: si-list-bounce@freelists=2Eorg > [mailto:si-list-bounce@freelists=2Eorg]On Behalf Of Brent DeWitt > Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 8:11 PM > To: si-list@freelists=2Eorg > Subject: [SI-LIST] just curious >=20 >=20 > Has this list become the most popular technical list in India=20 > in the last > few months??? >=20 > Brent DeWitt > Loveland, CO >=20 > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > To unsubscribe from si-list: > si-list-request@freelists=2Eorg with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field >=20 > or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: > http://www=2Efreelists=2Eorg/webpage/si-list >=20 > For help: > si-list-request@freelists=2Eorg with 'help' in the Subject field >=20 > List FAQ wiki page is located at: > http://si-list=2Eorg/wiki/wiki=2Epl >=20 > List technical documents are available at: > http://www=2Esi-list=2Eorg >=20 > List archives are viewable at: =20 > =09=09http://www=2Efreelists=2Eorg/archives/si-list > or at our remote archives: > =09=09http://groups=2Eyahoo=2Ecom/group/si-list/messages > Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: > =09=09http://www=2Eqsl=2Enet/wb6tpu > =20 >=20 ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@freelists=2Eorg with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: http://www=2Efreelists=2Eorg/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@freelists=2Eorg with 'help' in the Subject field List FAQ wiki page is located at: http://si-list=2Eorg/wiki/wiki=2Epl List technical documents are available at: http://www=2Esi-list=2Eorg List archives are viewable at: =20 =09=09http://www=2Efreelists=2Eorg/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: =09=09http://groups=2Eyahoo=2Ecom/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: =09=09http://www=2Eqsl=2Enet/wb6tpu =20=0D -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web=2Ecom/ =2E ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List FAQ wiki page is located at: http://si-list.org/wiki/wiki.pl List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.org List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu
