Hi Kaustubh, If reflections are neglible (as close to zero as possible) then it is possible to estimate the effect of cascading a number of two port networks by adding/subtracting the dB values of the S21 coefficients. This is what i think the person in the paper you have reviewed has done. I don't know the procedure for de-embedding mems structures but if for example removing test fixture effects from a measurement then firstly you have to characterise the test fixture using s-parameters, convert these to their transfer matrix representation and using inverse matrix multiplication you can remove the test fixture effects. This will give you the return loss and insertion loss of the DUT. Hope this is of use Eoin Mc Gibney Postgraduate student AWS group CIT Cork > >> >> -----Original Message----- > >> From: Kaustubh Bhate [mailto:kbhate@xxxx] > >> Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 7:57 AM > >> To: si-list@xxxx > >> Subject: [SI-LIST] de-embedding of mems > >> > >> > >> Hi, > >> Can somebody point me to a standard/known procedure for doing > >> de-embedding of > >> mems measurements? > >> > >> I have seen a paper that subtracts the insertion loss (in > >> dB)of an identical > >> thru-line from "a mems-switch-interconnect" assembly > >> measurement(in dB).Is that > >> a correct/reasonable approach of eliminating the loss from > >> the pad parasitics > >> and the interconnects? > >> If the the raw s-parameters are subtracted for the same, as > >> above,(instead of at > >> the dB level) the results are totally different. > >> > >> Also what about de-embedding for return loss?
