Hi Charles,
Late Steve Weir was a big proponent of X2Y capacitors. He had published
material showing improvement in power plane impedance by using significantly
smaller number of X2Y capacitors compared to standard capacitors. I am sure if
you google it you will be able to find the material.

Our tests show that the X2Y capacitor is no better than a properly mounted
0402 capacitor.
