another benefit can also be added in the list:
"press-fit connectors will be useful when you need to experiment with
number of connectors from different vendors on the same test-board. This is
just to ensure that best connector goes in the final product.."

Harold,
In addition to the benefits mentioned by Alan above, press-fit connectors
make it possible to replace
individual pins that might be bent or otherwise damaged through use.  This
can be very useful in the
case of a backplane system in which the male connector header on the
backplane gets damaged by
by insertion of a misaligned daughter card or one with a damaged connector
(or even a dropped screwdriver!).
If the product had a soldered connector on the backplane, the whole
connector would have to be removed
and replaced, which can be difficult.

Experts,

What are the pro and cons of through-hole and press-fit connectors?

As far as I know, through-hole connectors require wave soldering, which
is
highly undesirable for manufacturing reasons. Press-fit process is
reliable,
repeatable and high yield.

From a design perspective, I couldn't not find any good study on the
joint
reliability, connectivity and other performance metrics comparing these
two.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

harold
