Hupeng, Just to add one more point. Why does pre-emphais increases the magnitude of higher frequencey components ? The catch here is, power sprectral density of noise increases with square of frequency. Hence to get more noise immunity it will be better if we increase the PSD of higher frequencies. Preemphasis is generally done in FM transmission (before modulation)where the higher frequencies are amplified to get more noise immunity. At the recevier end deemphasis should be done to cancel the effect of preemphasis. If the serdes you use works in serial mode it is basically dealing with a FM signal. Hence, the same concept can be applied.
