At a former employer I eschewed sockets in favor of soldeing the components
(ICs) onto 15 mil thick, 4-layer test boards. The boards were 100 x 100 mm.
We then had much less to de-embed. Probing was via a 40 GHz probe.

Both Intel & AMD are no longer competing for higher CPU speeds.

lower silicon node , moderate CPU speed with multi-core architecture, much
higher functionality in smallest possible chip & High speed IO.

I want both to advance, but I actually feel it's nice to see IO make"'Si-list'"

speed costs of IO, so I'm kind of happy to see IO making some
significant advances relative to CPU throughput.

From Lee Ritchey: Isn't it amazing how quick we seem to get used to
high frequencies by saying that 6 GHz is not such a high frequency!
6 GHz? 8-) That's practically down close to DC by now, isn't it?
;-)
Lee, did you realize that it's actually been ~15 years ago now that I
working on that 13 Gbit/6.5 GHz backplane with you? That was waaaaayback
when 6 Ghz was fairly cutting edge, and we had to build that connectorparasitics & shouldgive fairly accurate results , when these IC's are
test
board to find one good backplane connector (out of 4 we tested) for
running
at that speed. It's a lot easier to do that speed now.
A lot of projects I work with these days are in the 40-75 GHz range.

There are a lot of vendors available especially for 6 Ghz which is not
such a high frequency.
looks at proceedings and exhibitors of workshops like BITS to get some
names and then contact the vendors to get the details.
