Dear David,
Its good to have a ground plan underneath the connector from SI
prospective, where as make sure that it doesn't affect in component
assembly(DFA) may result in component lifting sometimes. If you have enough
ground pins connected to plan and are evenly distributed pins it good and
will not create any problem.
This is my suggestion on it.

Hi all,
Would anyone care to offer an opinion on whether or not itâs a good idea
to excavate the ground plane metal beneath the pin lands of a Samtec QSH
series connector, when designing the footprint?
The example footprints on Samtecâs web site do NOT have this metal
excavated, but Iâve heard rumors that their SI team recommends this
practice to those, whom inquire. Iâm just looking for some clarity and
clarification on the subject.
Thanks!
