Cokenias from T. N. Cokenias Consulting The electric power grid and household electrical wires are harsh EMC environments, yet they have been attractive as communications media because they are everywhere. Until recently, only low speed data and intercom voice communications were practical over household wiring, due to the high noise levels presented by motors, dimmers, relays, switches, and other noise sources. Overhead wires from power pole to the house are subject to even higher levels of noise from local arcing and nearby radio stations. In the last five years semiconductor and software developers have come up with methods of modulation, Forward Error Correction, and medium characterization that make the power lines practical for interconnecting networks nodes and access points at ethernet speeds. Standards are being developed for throughput speeds of 200 MBps and the FCC has recently adopted rules for certification of broadband over power line (BPL) devices, while ETSI and CISPR have draft standards they are developing. The presentation will include an introduction to communications over powerlines, to standards in place and in development, the EMC concerns of the radio community, and EMC test procedures for power line communications systems. Tom Cokenias worked as an engineer at the FCC Laboratory in Columbia, MD. Since 1983 he has held senior engineering positions at several EMC labs in the SF Bay Area. He is founder and principal consultant at T. N. Cokenias Consulting.
