Subject: [SI-LIST] Attachments to si-list being disabled

si-list-

On Friday several 3Mbyte+ attachments were sent over si-list.
3MB * 2400 subscribers equates to a HUGE amount of bandwidth
utilized. The load on the system just about crashed the server
and certainly effected the throughput of the other lists hosted
on freelists.org.

To alleviate the problem, I have just altered the list configuration
to NOT allow attachments to si-list. However, an alternater arrangement
is in the works that will allow list users to post files for download
by those who have an interest in them. This way, server bandwidth will
not be consumed in sending large attachments tpo 2.4K users when they
may be of interest to only a small percentage of the recipients, but
at the same time there will be a mechanism for providing the files to
those who want them. Details on the file posting arrangement will follow
in the next couple of days. In the interim, attachments will be dumped by
the
system when they are found.
