Oh no. Here come the OOtO messages!

At the risk of sounding like a sour old ham, at least for the Technician Class
license there's not really much RF in it. There are a number of practice tests
online which draw from the published question pool, so you can look yourself.
www.qrz.com is just one site with them.

Still, I think it's worthwhile for anyone working with high-speed or high
frequency systems. There are so many aspects to be active in, pretty much any
technical interest is covered. Software? OK. RF? Duh. Digital? You're
kidding me right? Community service? There are plenty of opportunities.

One aspect I plan to get more involved in is the Broadband-Hamnet project. GHz
amateur radio using consumer and commercial WiFi equipment. See www.bbhn.org
for more info.

Of course, in the USA there's always the ARRL at arrl.org.

It is unfortunate that SI engineers do not begin with the basics in RF - go get
a ham license, become comfortable building RF equipment!
Grab a copy of ARRL, QST, etc. and read up, there are lots of TDR ideas on the
cheap, and you will actually learn something by building it, and sitting on the
bench. Heres one:

If you care about the result, buy a network analyzer. They are NOT expensive
and have many uses beyond Impedance. If you want to be an engineer you need
to have the basic tool and a VNA is even more valuable than a scope in some
cases.

That or hire someone to do the measurement for you.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Impedance measurement

I am looking to measure impedance of a trace on a PCB. What is the simplest
way to do. I neither have TDR nor the network analyzer. I am looking for a
crude method of measuring it. Please, suggest ways of doing it.
