Tom,

    I am afraid I have to disagree with your synopsis that the "thermal" 
connections do not add impedance.

My own experience in the layout of Hihg speed lasers drivers which are very low 
impedance is that "full-copper" vias reduce the parasitic inductance 
substantially.
