The article describes very well how you can make sure that the radiation you
Layout creates stays inside the PCB, but this comes with a cost and I'm not
convinced that it is needed if your design is optimized for SI (especially on
backplanes).
I only use edge plating if the customer requires it or if there is need for it
(i.e. I know that there will be radiation inside) but that's very rare. On the
Backplanes I've done without edge plating not a single one failed any EMC test
and that ranges from DC to 100G Ethernet, Video routers, Media Gateways, Base
Stations and many more low and high speed Systems. Daughtercards are a
different story because there a more potential sources of radiation.
I'm not saying that edge plating doesn't work, I'm just saying that to my
knowledge good backplane design doesn't require it.
Just my two cents.
