By your measure, was ECL ever alive?  I don't think ECL ever was a main
stream logic family.  It always filled a niche in certain areas including
test equipment, clock distribution, communications equipment, but not a
great deal more.  Yes there were some large systems built mostly with ECL,
but not high volume products.

I don't have numbers, but I wonder if it might be more fair to say that ECL
and its descendants have held their own all this time, as a small but
important alternative.
