The relation of the amplitudes of the decaying sine waves of a tank circuit in
decay is directly related to the Q of the circuit. If your tank's C is the PCB
and a know value of L with a know Q is available (NBS) then the mesurements
will yield the loss tangent.

You need to choose a low value of L to yield results at the frequency of
interest.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Experimental calculation of loss tangent and DK

Hi everyone:
I am a student in Binghamton University. I want to find the loss tangent and DK
of a material over a wide frequency range (0-12 GHz). In order to do so my
experimental setup consisted of two 2" by 2" metal planes with the material in
between. I then found the impedance vs freqeuncy reponse on the network
analyzer. I was able to find the postition of the first resonant frequency and
the 3dB bandwidth. from this how can I accurately calculate the loss tangent
and the DK of the material. A paper suggest using the formula (f2-f1)/f0 for
calculating the loss tangent
where f0 is the first resonant frequency
f1 is the lower 3 dB frequency
f2 is the upper 3 dB frequency
Is this valid? or is there any other way of calculating the loss tangent.
Please help

Raseel
