Ixon the difficulty / extra effort with using a SA + TG as a poor man's VNA is in calibrating out your cables + instrument. If you are looking primarily for things like resonances and don't need to get the S parameters dead on, or you have the time and patience to compensate your measured results with post processing then the SA + TG can provide you useful insights. If you need high accuracy, I would rent a VNA.
