Rafael, For the greatest flexibility HFSS is the best choice. You have a macro language for scripting operations. There is also a optimization module and a SPICE extraction module. To increase throughput they have a dual processor option and they have released the 64-bit code to current users who can support it. HFSS does require a significant investment of time to learn, but it is well supported and capable of covering the range of features you want (antennas, embedded elements, interconnects, etc.). I think you will find yourself brushing up on your EM fundamentals to get the most out of it. One of the less exploited features is the field calculator. It allows you to manipulate the data with vector and integral operations to extract the information you want. Another nice feature is that the 3D models you develop in HFSS are also usable in their quasi-static tool Spicelink 3-D. If your structures are greater than 1/10 of a wavelength it's solutions are valid and you can extract lumped and distributed element SPICE models faster than HFSS. Obviously the 2.5D solvers are a lot faster, but if you can only get one solver to work with it might be better to have a 3D solver like CST Microwave Studio or HFSS. The only limitation you will run into is not being able to solve gigantic models (of course the 64 bit code makes for a lot of elements and can access 20+ Gb of memory), but you can always solve smaller portions and cascade the S-parameters together in a linear circuit simulator (Ansoft offers a free student version that works nicely). Hello SI-List, We are investigating packages, interconnects, antennas and PCB components such as spiral inductors, capacitors... We are currently reviewing various 3D EM simulators such as HFSS, sonnet and Eagleware. Does anybody have any previous experience with them? and which of them would you recommend? Thank you very much in advance.
