Hi all,
I have to generate 3rd overtone from a crystal
oscillator circuit. The commonly available circuits
suggest usage of tank circuit as one of the loads for
crystal oscillator.
Here is how I did simulations.
I modelled the crystal consisting of 3 different
series resonance ckts all in parallel, with a parallel
capacitor. One of resonant circuit offers fundemnetal
resonance with high amplitude, 2nd offers 2nd overtone
with much less amplitude and 3rd for 3rd overtone with
much lesser amplitude.
The tank circuit has an inductor and cap in
parallel. The corner frequency of tank circuit as
suggested should be half-way between fundemental and
third overtone.
When I designed it as above, the gain was highest at
frequency which is below tank resonance freq and also
is not one of overtones from crystal.
If keep my tank circuit corner freq is nearly twice
third overtone, I have good gain at third overtone.
My question is at freq above tank corner freq, the
tank becomes inductive and whole circuit becomes
imbalanced.
How does this correlate with my results. Also am I
doing the simulations in the right way?

Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Partha!
