Hi Jeff, There are may be number of cases when âisolated groundsâwith caps
between should be useful, and some of them have already been noted. Onemore
simple illustration is this: consider device that has two parts â part 1
withhigh current that might be different at various mode of operation, and
precisionpart 2 with low consumption. If grounds were not separate, variable IR
dropthat happens at common part of the ground will impact the precision of the
part2. Separation grounds helps to reduce impact of the IR drop variations at
changingthe mode of the part 1 on part 2 precision; adding capacitors helps to
reduce theloop inductance that raised at grounds separation.
Thanks, Iliya Zamek

Subject: [SI-LIST] Caps between "isolated grounds"?
I was looking at some designs and found different ground symbols connected by
capacitors. Can anyone explain why this might be done? Everything I've seen
or heard says this is a bad thing (I would connect them directly), but I want
to be sure I'm not missing something. I think there are some A/D devices
which have specific guidelines for separating digital and analog grounds, but I
don't think they'd be connected by caps.
Thanks,
Jeff Loyer
