Leo,
Ok, so your problem is: the higher the impedance, the higher the losses, and
you're talking about test coupons.

Maybe I misinterpret the problem. If you have test coupons, and you see higher
losses for higher impedance, then this might simply be the result of narrower
traces. I just calculated roughly for a 100Ohm differential pair in low loss
material 5-5-5 routing I end up with approximately 0.02dB/inch change at 4GHz
when the impedance spans from 90-110 Ohm. So depending on your settings I think
0.05dB/inch could be true.

BR
Gert

Hello Gert:
Thank you for your explanation, but I think my impedance always meet the
tolerance +/-10% from the spec.
And between -10% spec and +10% spec the insertion loss gets proportional with
the increasing impedance. The largest loss difference can be 0.05dB/inch.
Should I say there's nothing wrong with the result?
Best regards!

Hi Leo,

No simulation error, losses increase with impedance mismatch.
If the impedance at any point of the traces isn't matched, this mismatch will
cause reflections. The reflected energy is taken from the initial signal, hence
every mismatch causes losses.
A completely mismatched trace will have small reflections all along the trace,
thus it will have more Insertion loss.

Gert

Betreff: [SI-LIST] how can impedance effect insertion loss

Hello guys:
Would anyone of you can help me with how impedance effect insertion loss?

I have some troubles in simulating insertion loss on test coupons.

It seems the higher the impedance is the larger the insertion loss becomes.

The frequency is 4GHz. Do you have the problem either?

Best regards!

Leo
