To put it simple: The inductance is formed by the currents, and that includes the return currents. The signal currents will introduce a return current on any nearby metal. The inductance of this loop (trace / nearby metal) is affecting the trace inductance as it is set parallel to the other inductances of any other return path. I want to consider both case when the shielding trace is grounded and floating. It is obvious that capacitance of the target trace is going to be changed, but how inductance is affected is the open question?
